Finding Peace in God's Promises

{Finding Peace in God’s Promises}

In the chaos of modern-day life, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Each of us faces unique challenges and difficulties that often result in anxiety and exhaustion. As believers, we have a profound resource to combat chaos: the storehouse of God’s promises. God who created us, understands our human frailties. Psalm 103:14 reminds us “For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” This verse reassures us that God doesn’t expect us to have the durability of a machine and that he knows our individual abilities.

Throughout the Bible, there are 8,810 promises, each a testimony to God’s faithfulness to his children. With 365 days in a year, that provides us with 24 promises every day. By immersing ourselves in God’s Word and trusting in His promises, we can find the peace and strength to overcome any obstacles. One of these promises is found in Jeremiah 29:11, which says "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." These words were spoken during a time of tremendous hardship, directed to  Jews who were living in exile in Babylon. The application of this verse extends to us today:  even when life is uncertain, we can trust that God is in control and has a beautiful plan for our lives.

Additionally, God’s promises remind us of his immutability. One of the most recurring reasons for stress include major life changes. Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” and reminds us of God’s unchanging nature. This means that the same God who fulfilled his promises to the Israelites is the same God who keeps his promises to us now. By holding onto the promise of a changeless God, we can navigate through the changes of life.

God’s promises often come with a requirement of obedience. The Israelites provide an excellent example of this truth. Looking back, we see that God’s blessings were closely tied to their obedience to his commandments. In Deuteronomy 28:1-2, God says, “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God.” When the Israelites obeyed, they were in harmony with God.

However, when the Israelites disobeyed, they faced consequences and missed out on the fullness of God’s promises and blessings. Deuteronomy 28:15 says “But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you.” This pattern causes us to realize that while God’s promises are steadfast, our experience of His blessings is contingent on our obedience. The Israelites were delayed in entering the Promised Land, because of their disobedience. Numbers 14:33-34 illustrates this: "And your children will be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years and suffer for your unfaithfulness until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you." The Israelites faced significant consequences for their disobedience and sinful ways.

By trusting and obeying God’s Word, we align ourselves with His will, which brings us peace. Knowing that we are living out God’s plan for our lives provides stability that surpasses our circumstances. As we obey, we open ourselves up to the fullness of God’s promises, all the while experiencing His peace in every aspect of our lives.

In conclusion, embracing God’s promises and obeying his commandments leads to peace and fulfillment. As we trust God’s immutability and sovereign plan for our lives, we can navigate the chaos of life. May we all find rest and peace in the immutability of God's promises.
